Object history
Formerly in the Gautier, Revelstoke (sold by Puttick & Simpson, 17th May 1935, lot 445, £15 15s) and Baring Collections. Bought at Bonham's, 23rd July 1976 (lot 88).

Historical significance: This is the only known stoneware posset pot of this shape. The light buff colour, use of rouletting and similarity of the Nevers-type handles to those on Bristol delftware suggests a Bristol origin. Spiralled tendrils are found on Bristol delft posset-pots of the late 17th century. Evidence exists for the production of stoneware at Bristol in the early 18th century and the colouring of this pot matches fragments of Bristol stoneware given by Pountney to the V&A in 1914.
