Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The printing plate for these stamps commemorating the first manned moon landing was taken into space on Apollo 11 and a proof was hand ‘cancelled’ by one of the crew during the flight. NASA artist Paul Calle created the image from his sketches of the astronauts preparing for their voyage. The design was kept a closely-guarded secret until the stamp was released two months after the successful mission in July 1969.
