| Object history | This dish shows a scene from the Anglo-American War of 1812-15 in which Commodore MacDonough commander of American naval forces in Lake Champlain won the decisive battle of the same name. The Staffordshire potteries were keen to exploit the patriotic consumer market in America and once the war finished in 1815 resumed exporting quantities of wares. This dish was made later, c.1835, and shows continuing patriotic tastes. The image is taken from 'Macdonough's victory on Lake Champlain and defeat of the British Army at Plattsburg by Genl. Macomb, Sept.117th 14'18 Engraving by B. Tanner, 1816, after H. Reinagle. |
