Teapot
ca. 1765 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The 'trellis of flowers' pierced decoration on this teapot has been achieved by cutting through an outer wall of white earthenware coverd by a mottled glaze to an inner wall of reddish-buff earthenware with a colourless glaze. Pierced decoration such as this is derived from Chinese Yixing stoneware pots.
This teapot is an example of 'tortoisesell ware' owing its aforementioned mottled glaze, produced by applying copper and manganese to cream-coloured earthenware to stain it, and then coating the piece with a clear glaze. This glaze was pioneered by potter Thomas Whieldon (1719-95) of Fenton Low, Staffordshire.
