Preliminary costume design by Lila De Nobili (1916-2002) for a group of women in Franco Zeffirelli's production of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Rigoletto at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Lila De Nobili designed the sets and costumes for the production which was first performed on 7th February 1964. It remained in the repertory until 1984. Lila De Nobili’s contribution to the opera was highly praised: The Guardian on 8th February 1964 described her costumes as excellent and the Sunday Times on 9th February 1964 referred to the first scene as a ‘complex and gorgeous Veronese tableau vivant'.

Physical description | Preliminary costume design by Lila De Nobili (1916-2002) for a group of women in Rigoletto. A group of seven women drawn in pencil and ink, with two painted in colour. They wear long gowns with bodices and a variety of full sleeve designs. One of the women wears a bright blue gown trimmed with a red and white at the neckline, and a matching blue hat. Over her dress she wears an off the shoulder long coat, possibly in fur. The other figure that has been painted is wearing a long brown full skirt with a dark brown bodice and full sleeves. |
