Object history | Given by Spencer G. Perceval |
Historical context | Until about 1600, the English made little attempt to imitate the decorated luxury wares imported from France, Holland, Germany and elsewhere. Sophistocated moulded stove tiles were made by immigrant German potters, while functional vessels, often with copper-green lead glaze or brushed slip decoration, were made whereever suitable clay was found. London, where the population of England was concentrated, was well supplied with coarse pottery produced at Mill green in Essex, and from the 16th century with 'Border Ware', refined whiteware from the Surrey-Hampshire borders. |
