View of the Piazza del Popolo, Rome

Drawing
ca. 1692 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Many of the most accomplished topographical artists active in Rome in the seventeenth century were Netherlandish. 'Vanvitelli', the Dutchman Gaspar van Wittel (1653-1736) pioneered a popular style of highly-detailed view painting and several of his works were engraved by his associate and countryman, the enigmatic Gomar Wouters. This hitherto unidentified drawing in the Vanvitelli manner is a meticulous study by Wouters for his own independent large print of the Piazza del Popolo published in 1692.
