Object history | According to Rodney Searight: - `Bt Phillips, [26] Nov, 1973 [P75], £38, [with SD.888]'. |
Historical context | SD.887 and SD.888 may be sketches made in connection with the lithography of two plates in Roberts, Holy Land, 1842-9, Vol.II, [Pls.43 & 37], (1855 edn., Vol.II, Pls.87 & 81). Despite the poor quality of the draughtsmanship, the inscriptions are very similar to Roberts's hand. Nevertheless, since James Duffield Harding (1798-1863) was originally asked to do some of the lithographs in the series, the drawings could be by him or a studio assistant; eventually all the lithographs were executed by Louis Haghe. See Ballantine, p.141 and Searight Archive. |
