Object history
According to Rodney Searight: - `Bt fr PHW [Prue Heathcote-Williams], March 1972, £90'. [Roland Beckett, Alpine Gallery, London, March 1972 (69).]
Historical context
Reproduced as Egypt and Nubia, 1846-49, Vol.II, [Pl.25], (1855 edn. Vol.V, Pl.193), lithograph by Louis Haghe. Possibly one of the watercolours which the artist worked up for reproduction from an earlier sketch. It shows the Roman Mammisi in front of the Christian Basilica; in the left background is the Temple of Hathor. Roberts visited and took measurements at Dendara on 19 October 1838 on his way up the Nile. On his way down river he stopped there to make drawings on 6-8 December. See also Ballantine, pp.88-9 & 99.
