BADGE: PERESTROIKA Made in the U.S.S.R. about 1989 Lithograph on paper laminated onto polystyrene Given by Elfrida Filippi E.269-1991 Perestroika [restructuring] was the policy of fundamental political and economic reform initiated by Mikhail S. Gorbachev, alongside glasnost [openness of information] in the second half of the 1980s. These democratising changes ultimately brought about the disintegration of the U.S.S.R. in 1991. The traditional Soviet hammer and sickle are irradiated by a sunburst symbolising the new enlightenment.
