A Gipsy Encampment at Filaret outside Bucharest

Watercolour
1869 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Preziosi visited Bucharest, the capital of the two then recently united Rumanian principalities, in 1868 and 1869. The large number of drawings made by him on these two trips range from atmospheric wash studies of river and sky to highly detailed figure compositions illustrating the folk-life of Rumania. The majority are still in Rumania, in the Muzeul de arta al Republich Socialiste Romania. This lively drawing, though rapidly executed, packs in much visual information. It focuses on the gipsies and their distinctive cart with its curious axle and springing arrangement, and includes in the foreground a girl carrying an unusually turned and carved wooden water-pot.
