This view is taken from the European side of the Bosphorus, looking over the roofs of Pera towards the Asian shore, the Kiz Kulesi (the Maiden's or Leander's Tower) visible in the left background on its tiny island. The white buildings are the barracks at Scutari (modern Üsküdar). A steamship, probably British, is shown in midstream, sailing towards the Sea of Marmora on the right.
