Historical context
This is a version of a pen and ink drawing, inscribed (Interior) Palace of Priam at Alexandria Troas., one of a series of twenty-four in an album (Vol.I), formerly owned by Lord Elgin, and now in the BM, Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities. Another drawing in this series, inscribed Vue d'Alexandria Troas, shows the same or a similar triple archway and is reproduced as an etching titled Splendid Remains of public Balneae at Alexandria Troas (SP466) in the Revd E.D. Clarke, Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia and Africa, Part II, Section I, 1812, facing p.152. Clarke was at Alexandria Troas on 14 March 1801: see Clarke, Appendix V, p.709. Préaulx may have accompanied him on some of his travels in Turkey and Greece, 1801-02.
