Historical context | See Searight Archive for suggestions that the artist might be either Hugh MacDonell, who visited North Africa in 1810, and succeeded Branckley as Consul-General in 1812, or the Revd C. Willyams, and for a list of HM ships calling at Algiers, 1806-12. After the battle of Trafalgar, Victory was in Gibraltar, at the end of 1805 or early in 1806, before going to Chatham for refitting. This allows for the possibility of the vessel being off North Africa in 1806, as the inscriptions suggest, although she would be in a battered state, which is not apparent in the watercolour.
