Historical context
SD.803 and SD.804 are illustrations for the artist's Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde, Représentés par des Figures dessinées de la main de Bernard Picart, &c., 8 tom., Amsterdam, 1723-43. This image is reversed in Cérémonies, Tome Second, 1728, facing p.354, and in Histoire Générale des Cérémonies [...], Paris, 1741, Tome VI, following p.66.
