Cotton fabrics with repeating floral designs like this one were usually used for garments at the Mughal and Deccani courts. This piece was formerly in the toshkhana (wardrobe store) of the Nizams of Hyderabad in the Deccan. It may have been made in Burhanpur in the northern Deccan, a known centre of production of printed and painted textiles.

Fragment panel of printed, painted and dyed cotton, probably made in Burhanpur, 18th century.
Physical description
Fragment panel of cotton printed and dyed with a repeating pattern of staggered rows of yellow roses. Printed in four colours. The ground is impressed with a diamond trellis. Repetitions in horizontal rows and within the impressed trellis of a flowering rose-plant bearing three yellow roses, buds and green leaves. Two pieces sewn into one panel.
