Lycra was introduced and trademarked by Du Pont in
1959. It is a long chain polymer composed of at least
85% segmented polyurethane, which can be extended
up to six times its own length. Originally used for
corsetry. Lycra has revolutionised the appearance and
fit of sports and fashion clothing in recent years. Cycling
shorts were originally designed for sporting purposes
but were quickly seized upon by the fashion market for
everyday wear also. |
