Offset field design of human figures among trees
DESIGN: Field: dark blue ground with six bands in which 4 figures (2 repeated) alternate with trees where a large bird roosts. The figures, probably male, wear either striped trousers, a coat decorated by botehs, a sash worn diagonally and a cap top by a V shape (of feathers?) the other wears plain trousers, a coat decorated with stripes and zigzags and a pointed (cone) hat. In the field are small animals, birds, trees and snowflakes. The field is edged with inward facing orange triangles.
Main border: white ground, a floral meander on green stems with predominately red and orange flowers.
Inner and Outer borders: dark red ground with a double meander on a dark green stem with dark brown flowers and white lozenges.
Lowermost border in dark blue and white alternating squares.
Embroidered through the lower borders in pink thread: 57H

Wool knotted pile on wool foundation, asymmetrical knot. PILE: knotted, looped, wool, 11 colours: dark red, red, orange, dark green, green, light green, dark blue, light blue, dark brown, brown, white; asymmetrical, open to the left, tied around 2 warp threads. WARP: wool, Z2S; depressed, density 26-30 per inch (104-120 per dm); light brown WEFT: wool, Z2S; 2 shoots after each row of knots, 2 rows of knots to 12" (42 dm). very light pink. SIDE FINISH: 1 cord oversewn with red and dark green wool giving striped effect, finishing in a short side plait. Lower: warp loops 2 1/2" (27 cm) in the right half of the carpet where the cable has broken and warp ends have been twisted into a fringe. Above warp loops is another cord and above 1/2" (2.5 cm) plain weave with white cotton and then 1" (2.5 cm) plain weave with red wool followed by 1 row of weft wrapping in red and dark green wool. NB: lower left hand side has too tight tension which crimples the bottom left area. Top end: 3/2" (2 cm) plain weave in red wool. Warp fringe 5" (13 cm) knotted. Between plain weave and pile, one row of weft twining in red and blue wool.
