This is a fashion design for a long pleated skirt, long-sleeved blouse, laced jerkin and cloche hat, with two fabric samples attached. This design featured in Vogue in 1970 and the Sunday Times among other magazines. This design shows how different wool fabrics are used with contrast colour and pattern.

Bill Gibb launched his own label in the early 1970s, with instant success.

Historical context note

Scottish designer, William ‘Bill’ Gibb was educated at Central Saint Martins, where he began designing bohemian, ethnic-inspired and feminine garments. His designs defined fashion in the seventies.

In 1972 he showed his debut collection, and his popularity increased; he was endorsed by Vogue and his mix of historical references and global influences, combined with a talent for contrasting prints and fabrics, made his glamorous designs extremely popular.
