This panel relief, representing the Lamentation over the Dead Christ, was formerly ascribed to the Paduan Giovanni Minelli (b. ca. 1460; d. after 1527), but is now thought to have been made at Ferrara.
The relief formed the door of a tabernacle. The style and figure types relate closely to works produced at Ferrara in the circle of Niccolo Baroncelli (d. 1453).
Physical description
In the centre is the seated Virgin, wearing a short veil and mantle, gazing downwards to her right at the body of the dead Christ, which is supported on her knees. Her right hand supports the right shoulder of Christ, and her left rests on his waist.

Object history note
