Historical context
The `Cingans' of the title are Çingene or Çingâne, literally `Gypsies' in Ottoman Turkish.
One of several studies by the artist of the peoples encamped in the Xanthus area: see N. N. Solly, Memoir of the Life of William James Müller, 1875, pp.196, 210, 269-271; and Searight Archive. Two other versions of this image are Cingans Hut, inscribed, dated 1843 and signed with initials (BM, P & D; 1878-12-28-111) and Tent of Zingaris, formerly in the Searight Collection.
