This brooch is very similar in design to that of a grapes brooch by the firm of Fonsèque and Olive. Olive, who had worked for the renowned Parisian goldsmith and jeweller, Lucien Falize, went into partnership with the jeweller M. Fonsèque in 1885. Olive's designs, such as the coffee bean brooch and the grapes brooch of 1889 were very popular for a number of years and it was his ingenuity in design which led to the firm's success.
