Cf. black chalk drawings by Mayer of Sicily in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam, acquired in 1778 by a party of Dutch travellers: see J.W. Niemeijer, ed., Reisjournal in Aquarel /A Tour in Words and Watercolour, Amsterdam 1986. Mayer visited Sicily c.1778-82. He accompanied Jean Houel on a trip to Mount Etna in 1780, and was referred to in the latter's Voyage pittoresque des isles de Sicile de Malte et de Lipari, Vol.II, Paris, 1784, p.101, as `Dom Louis Mayer, dessinateur du Prince Biscaria'. Several watercolours by Mayer of Sicily, including one of the eruption of Mount Etna on 18 May 1780, are in the BM, PD (C195): see BL, Catalogue of Maps ..., 1962, Vol.III,
