Historical context note

Towards the end of the 1790s, Mayer was employed by the Berners family of Woolverstone Park, on the Shotley peninsula, near Ipswich, Suffolk. Mayer had accompanied Charles Berners and others on the 1792 tour of Egypt, Palestine and Syria. The numbers on this and SD.658 indicate that they were part of a series. For further information, see notes and correspondence with R.G. Searight. Holbrook, near Wolverstone Park, was also owned by the Berners family. Cf. Near Holbrook, Suffolk, signed, inscribed, and dated 25 September 1799, in Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester
(D/10/1934) and five other Suffolk drawings by Mayer at Christchurch Mansions, Ipswich.
