Captain Hawk! The Highwayman

Playbill
1859 (printed)

The Theatre Royal Marylebone in Church Street, off Edgware Road, opened in 1831. It operated under many different names, including the Royal West London Theatre, and was well known in Victorian London for its fare of rousing melodramas and pantomimes. This playbill advertises an action-packed evening, featuring melodrama, singing, ballet by Carl Rowella's pupils, and an 'Olio of Oddities' from J.H. Stead (ca.1827-1866), who went on to make his name as a music hall star two years later with his peculiar song and jumping dance The Perfect Cure.
