In 1836 Lewis was invited to Tehran by Sir John McNeill, Envoy and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Shah. He travelled there via Trebizond (Trabzon), Erzurum and Tabriz with Robert Macdonald: see Macdonald, Personal Narrative of Military Travel and Adventure in Turkey and Persia, Edinburgh, 1859, pp.90-3 et passim.
