Historical context
Shah Ismail I, founder of the Safavid dynasty, was defeated by the Turks under Sultan Selim I (the Grim) at Chaldiran in 1514. In 1836 Lewis was invited to Tehran by Sir John McNeill, Envoy and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Shah. He travelled there via Trebizond (Trabzon), Erzurum and Tabriz with Robert Macdonald: see Macdonald, Personal Narrative of Military Travel and Adventure in Turkey and Persia, Edinburgh, 1859, pp.90-3 et passim. SD.579:2-4, 7 & 8 are dated between August and November 1836.
