The Havana Troupe at Billy Smarts Circus, Rochester, Kent, 2014

Drawing
2014 (drawn)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This sketch was made during a performance at Rochester, at incredibly rapid speed and only by the light afforded in the tent, by the Brighton-based illustrator, author, poet performer and teacher Curtis Tappenden. He visits many circuses and has made hundreds of lightning drawings capturing the moment at the ringside.

The 7-handed Havana Troupe of acrobats from Cuba are seen here performing their Russian Bar, Springboard, Hand to Hand and Parallel Bar acts with the new Billy Smart's Circus. The original Billy Smart's Circus was started by Billy Smart in 1946. The Festival of Britain celebrations of 1951 featured Smart's New World Circus and Funfair and Circus, but despite its popularity in the 1950s, the tenting show was forced to close in 1971. This version of Billy Smart's featured Yasmine Smart as Ring Mistress. The grand-daughter of Billy Smart, she presented her first equestrian act in the circus aged 10 with a troupe of Shetland ponies.
