Object history
According to Rodney Searight: - Bt. at Christie's 18.11.80 (199), £950, via the Fine Art Society.' At some point [1950s?] in the possession of Garick Fine Arts, 1811 Pine Street. Philadelphia PA.
Historical context
In January and February 1867, Lear travelled up the Nile to the Second Cataract, visiting Derr on the return journey: see RA, 1985 (27) and Lady Strachey, ed., Later Letters of Edward Lear, 1911, p.83. For further drawings from this trip, see Christie's sale catalogue
19.11.85 (65-9) and Searight Archive. The construction of Lake Nasser necessitated the removal of the rock-cut temple of Derr to Amadah.
