Historical context | Koca Mehmed Hüsrev Pasa (1769-1855) was an Ottoman admiral and statesman who became Grand Vizier in 1839. For the attribution to Kinglake, see Searight Archive, and cf. Eothen's frontispiece entitled Eastern Travel, reputedly by the author. See G. de Gaury, Travelling Gent The life of Alexander Kinglake (1809-1891), 1972. p.27. If correct, the Europeans would be Kinglake, his companion, `Methley' (Lord Pollington, later Earl of Mexborough) and the latter's servant, Steele, accompanied by their dragoman Mysseri. : |
