Physical description

Foliation: parchment. 4 ff.

Number of lines: 9 lines of stave and text (staves of 4 lines).

Language: Latin.

Script: Gothic bookhand.

Textual content: some leaves are bound back to front.
f. 1r-1v: Chant, headed ‘Dominici prima adventus’ in a 17th-century hand.
f.2v-r: Chants from ‘Feria V ad benedictus A’.
f.3v-r: Chants for Christmas, with a major incipit.
f.4r-v: Chants, headed ‘In Exaltatione sancta Crucis’ in a 17th-century hand, with a response.

Decoration: large ‘puzzle’ initials in red and blue, the height of 2 lines of music and text with penwork ornaments and half-fleur-de-lys running down the left-hand edge of the text with pen flourishing (ff. 1r, 2r, 3r).

Object history note

Written in France (Paris?), ca. 1385-1400 for a Carthusian House, possibly Champnol.
(1) Annotated in a 17th-century script stating that the leaves are extracted from an Antiphoner from the Charterhouse of Champnol, near Dijon.
(2) Bought with a 1578 printed book (now in the NAL 88.E.24) in 1895.
