Brief description
Oil and vinegar cruet set with salt cellar, des. Castiglioni, man.Alessi, Milan, 1984
Physical description
The two vessels for oil and vinegar rest on a rectangular place with curved ends. The surface of this base plate is covered with a series of engraved, parallel lines. At the centre of the two, parallel edges, the rim breaks to rise in the form of a shallow arc. The bottles are secured within a frame which has a circular sleeve as a base; the low rim rising towards the front. This is connected to a sleeve at the top of the neck by a handle, T shaped in cross section and rising at an angle to the base. It curves sharply inwards at the top and then upwards to fit within a sleeve running the height of the collar and set at the back. The collar is a cylindrical sleeve with acute angled rims. A small rectangular slot is cut out of the front to allow the passage of liquid. The lid is a circular disc with a raised oval section in the centre and is hinged at the back with two parallel, circular counterweights attached by wire to the rear. The spout of moulded nylon is concealed within the neck of the bottle.
