This ladle was used by Brahman priests in rituals of blessing the seed rice before its sowing during the Spring festival of 'Poet Mongkol' at the start of May. At this time sanctified water was sprinkled over the seed rice. The handle ends in the head of a naga or water spirit which has a moveable tongue.

Physical description
A wooden ladle in the form of a goose with a monster's head. Covered with black lac inlaid with diaper ornament and imbrications in mother of pearl and coloured glass. The head of a monster ('kala') is on the base of the ladle. This would have been used by Brahmin priests in rituals surrounding the sowing of the first crop at the inauguration of the agricultural season in May.
