The Chinese usually served food in small or medium-sized dishes, but not large ones such as this. Large dishes were made primarily to be sold to Central or Southeast Asian countries, where a large quantity of both green-glazed stoneware and blue-and-white porcelain have survived today. When used domestically inside China they served as container for fruit.

Given by Surgeon-General J. B. Hamilton, M.D., accessioned in 1902. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
