Carpet

Place of origin

Warp: white wool; Z2S; not depressed; 16-20 threads per in (~80 per dm).
Weft: light brown wool; Z2S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 8-10 knots per in (36-45 per dm).
Pile: wool; 11 colours - red, dark red, pink, yellow, dark green, light green, blue, dark blue, very dark blue, dark brown, white, yellow; symmetrical knot tied around 2 warp threads.
Side finish: 1 cord oversewn with dark brown wool.
End finish: upper - missing but evidence of plainweave with dark red wool.
Design:
Field: red ground of single large meander of very dark and dark blue with white - looks like a border pattern on a large scale.
Main border: very dark blue ground with pink angular meander with pink flowers and white leaves.
Inner and outer borders: yellow ground with blue meander and red flowers.

Object history
Purchased in Istanbul in 1897 from Mrs Alice Whitaker, daughter and heir of William Henry Wrench (1836-96). Wrench was British consul in the city when he died, and he had formed a significant collection of Ottoman and Iranian objects while in the consular service.
