The red lacquer bowl with lid and thin luted sides was produced by highly specialised craftsmen employed at the imperial court of Beijing. The interior of the bowl and the cover have a gilt incised inscription of a poem by the emperor Qianlong (1736-1795), comparing the object to a chrysanthemum flower. Both parts also bear the four character seal of his reign period. The date in the inscription corresponds to 1776.

Physical description
Fluted red lacquer bowl and cover, shaped as chrysanthemum flower. Inscribed in the interior on both bowl and cover with a poem by the Qianlong emperor. Both parts bear the four-character Qianlong seal mark.

    It is made in the shape of a fragent chrysanthemum But compared with the chrysanthemum it is more delicate As I sip tea, I am pleased to compare it With taking dew from this freshly picked flower Imperial brush of Qianlong in bingshen year (From TOCS 1978-90, p. 71)
