In the 19th century a Paris dealer bought this vase from its Japanese owner and later sold it to the V&A. The story of how it travelled from China to Britain is fascinating.
A manual on home furnishing published in China in the early 17th century advises the use of ceramic vases for flower arrangement in summer and bronze ones in winter. (In winter the water might freeze and crack a ceramic vase.) The Japanese loved using antique vases in their flower arrangements, and a few Chinese bronze vases, including this one, found their way to Japan.
