Historical context | Haag was in Jerusalem for about three months from April 1859. In 1860 he exhibited two Jerusalem watercolours, commissioned by Queen Victoria, at the OWS (224 & 232). The city of Jerusalem is seen across the Hinnom Valley. Among the monuments are (right) the Mosque of Al Aksa and the Dome of the Rock and (centre left) the dome of the Hurva synagogue; continuing to the left are the Tomb of David (outside the city walls), the Armenian quarter and the minaret of the Citadel. In the right distance is the Mount of Olives with the village of at Tur. |
