Historical context | Haag was in Jerusalem for about three months from April 1859. In 1860 he exhibited two Jerusalem watercolours, commissioned by Queen Victoria, at the OWS (224 & 232). This view, with the Birket sitt Miriam in the foreground, looks west across the Muslim cemetery to the walls of the old city of Jerusalem, in which, to the left, is the Golden Gate and, in the centre, the Gate of St.Stephen. Behind the walls is Al Haram as Sharif or Temple Mount with the Dome of the Rock prominent; to its left is the Mosque of Al Aksa See SD.464 |
