Historical context
Haag spent the winter of 1858-9 in Cairo, sharing a house in the Coptic quarter with F. Goodall. For information on the various shaykhs of Cairo, see Lane, Vol.I, pp.150-1. A portrait of the same subject by Goodall, dated Nov 19th [1858], was sold Sotheby's 8.11.84 (319): see Searight Archive. For another example of the two artists sketching together, see SD.436 and 468. An earlier version of the Searight portrait was exhibited at the Fine Art Society, 1882 (5).
