Historical context
Haag visited Baalbek in November 1859. Subsequently he painted several watercolour views of the ruins, including one for the Prince of Wales Royal Collection), and others which he sold to the dealer, Gambart. At least two versions of the composition of SD.460 are known: one, signed and dated 1860, sold Christie's 29.1.80 (100); the second, commissioned by Colonel Pennant on 5 May 1860, now at Penryhn Castle (The National Trust). See Searight Archive and D. Millar (forthcoming catalogue). Haag also exhibited views of Baalbek at the OWS in 1862 (25,134) and 1863 (69).
