Village men conversing with two armed horsemen, Algiers

Watercolour
1884 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The men are conversing outside a small house said to be near the Fontaine du Hamma and the Café des Platanes on the outskirts of Algiers; perhaps they are striking a bargain over the basket of oranges at their feet. The composition may be the same or similar to one entitled Algerian Gossip, exhibited by Gow at the Royal Academy in 1886. It is not known whether Gow visited Algeria and witnessed the scene himself, or whether he based it on a photograph or other image. Gow painted a variety of subjects, which he exhibited mainly at the New Water-Colour Society, but also at the Royal Academy, where he became Keeper and Librarian in 1911.
