Dress

c.1966 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Day dress made from green bonded wool jersey with a zipper down the centre front.

It was designed by Mary Quant for Ginger Group in about 1966. Quant started experimenting with jersey fabrics in 1963, the sculptural qualities of the material lending itself well to the sporty mini-dresses she wanted to design. Quant’s jersey dresses, produced in a variety of designs and colours, soon became some of her most popular pieces.

[Mary Quant exhibition, 2019] SKATER-STYLE DRESS 1967 Featured in Vogue as a ‘best buy with star quality’, this sporty dress would have cost a week’s wages for a shop assistant, at 8 and a half guineas (about £157). This was about twice the price of a jersey dress from high street chain Marks & Spencer. It was given by Jannette Flood, part of the mod scene of today, and long-time collector of Mary Quant designs.
