Object history
This object formed part of the Ceramics collection at the Museum of Practical Geology, on Jermyn Street, which was transferred en masse to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1901. Before that point, it was collected by Flinders Petrie at Amarna and given to the Jermyn Street Museum in 1882.

So-called 'blue-painted' pottery is well known from the New Kingdom, particularly the sites of Amarna and Malqata, a palace of Amenhotep III. The blue pigment used for decorating the surface of such jars was made from cobalt, sourced from the western deserts of Egypt. Common motifs included a range of floral and faunal patterns.
