Daniel Auber’s opera La Muette de Portici (The Mute Girl
of Portici) premiered in Paris in 1828. Its dramatic plot of
political uprising and seduction made it extremely popular.
The opera’s historical setting and spectacular effects were
particularly suited for stereoscopic photography, which
often gives a stage-set-like appearance to reality.
