    Historical context
Simon Brett is one of the most distinguished wood engravers of the last 50 years. Born in 1943, he learned the medium from Clifford Webb (whose work features in the V&A collection) at Saint Martin’s School of Art, London, where he trained principally as a painter. He has worked almost exclusively as a wood engraver since 1981 producing single prints, ephemera and illustrations for over sixty books.

This logo was designed for Deborah Coltham, an antiquarian book dealer and owner of Rare Books. Deborah chose the bee motif because Deborah means ‘busy bee’ in Hebrew and she has always loved bees. It therefore seemed a natural choice when it came to designing her logo back in 2006 when she set up her business.
