Place of origin |
Monochrome porcelains were among the greatest achievements of the Jingdezhen kilns. They were popular with both Chinese and foreigner consumers, and were used extensively by the imperial court.
Black, brown and green glazes were obtained from varying concentrations of iron oxides. The greater the concentration of iron the darker the colour. Translucent 'mirror black' glazes, such as this vase, were obtained with a combination of iron and manganese oxides, with the addition of small amounts of cobalt and copper.
