This dish may have been used for display or it may have been made with an accompanying ewer for handwashing.
The decoration has been incised uisng both fine and blunt styluses. Sections have been individually painted with oxides of copper (green) and iron or antimony (yellow-brown).
In the centre is the head and bust of a woman in profile. Her headdress is typical of the period with lengths of hair wound round a form, secured together with ribbon and held up by a light cord drawn round the forehead. She is positioned in front of a wattled hedge. The background is dotted and there are three rosetees. The dotted background was carefully executed with a rouletted wheel after the main image was incised.

In the centre is the head and bust of woman in profile. She is positioned in front of a wattled hedge. The background is dotted and there are three rosetees. The hollow of the dish is fluted, decorated both inside and outside with a feather pattern. On both upper and lower sides of the rim is a border of leaves on a continuous wavy stem. In the middle of the back is a seated unicorn, emblematic of chastity, again with a wattled hedge and two rosettes. |

The potter allowed the underglaze pigments to run in the glaze. The dotted backgrounds on nos. 20-1 were executed with a roulette (see no. 14).

Historical context | W. B. Honey on Bologna ware: The coloured lead glazes are limited, as a rule, to characteristic tones of more or less brownish yellow or amber colour and a strong leaf green, together with an uncoloured glaze of warm golden tone. Watttle fences and formal roses are also typical. Honey on 'gothic' foliage: There are three types: 1. a heart-shaped serrated leaf like a mulberry lead; generally on a serpentine stem and used as a border 2. lobed-leaf which could be a stylised oak leaf 3. serrated lancet-shaped leaf |
