Place of origin |
This appears to depict an episode in the French army's capture in 1843 of the retinue of Abd al-Qadir, leader of Algerian resistance to French colonialism. After the loss of his women and slaves, it was said by a contemporary French historian that the great Algerian chieftain was no longer a man: he surrendered in 1847, thus completing French hegemony in Algeria. The most famous representation of the event was Horace Vernet's huge Prise de la Smala d'Abd-el-Kader par le duc d'Aumale, painted in 1845 as part of the decoration of the Galerie des Batailles at Versailles.
Ginain exhibited frequently at the Salon in Paris and was known for his paintings of military subjects, which, after a visit to Algeria in 1840, included scenes from the French conquest.
