A Box at the Theatre, Paris

Print
1923 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Laura Knight made many paintings, drawings and subsequent prints of scenes showing dancers, or theatrical subjects. Here she has used the rich inky blacks which can be achieved with drypoint to capture the dramatic contrasts of light and dark inside a theatre. The scene is focused on the occupants of a box, including two fashionably dressed women with elaborate hats. This print has previously been known as 'A Box at the Theatre, Paris' but it has similarities with a painting she made in 1922, 'At the Folies Bergeres' so this may be a more accurate title.
